Vernon Designated as
Purple Heart Town

in celebration of the contributions and sacrifices made by Black Americans in American History
Vernon Mayor George Dozier Jr was on hand to accept the highway sign along with the first family. Mayor Dozier told the crowd what it meant to him to honor those veterans wounded in service to our country especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. His uncles, great uncles and grandfather all served in the armed forces, and he especially appreciated the honor. The event comminated with a Veterans Dinner jointly hosted by the Town of Vernon,
The Vernon Chamber of Commerce and The Vernon Charitable Foundation. Officials from each organization were on hand and expressed their gratitude as well to members of the Armed Forces.
The town was presented a certificate and highway sign by Don Nichols of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The Color Guard presented the colors. Afterwards everyone enjoyed BBQ dinner of BBQ brisket, ribs, chicken, smoke brats, baked beans, BBQ beans, salad, rolls, lemonade. But the biggest hit was Chef Jamie of Dallas famous Almond sheet cake for dessert, the crowd couldn't stop staking about it, and everyone went back for seconds. There was food in abondance so everyone and took plates home.
Don Nichols says it was a wonderful event truly a success. So much so that the Military Order of the Purple Heart donated $200 to the Vernon Chamber of Commerce as a gesture of appreciation.
